Documentation for QGIS 2.8¶. QGIS has a lot of documentation, partly translated. Please have a look into one of the documents below. Mac OS X / macOS¶ Official All-in-one, signed installers for for macOS High Sierra (10.13) and newer can be downloaded from the QGIS download page. Alternative builds supporting macOS 10.11 El Capitan and later are available from kyngchaos.com. QGIS North America 2020 virtual conference, July 17 2020 (and potentially Friday, July 24th) The QGIS US Users Group & partners in North America are proud to announce the QGIS North America 2020 virtual conference to be held on Friday, July 17, 2020 (and Friday, July 24th if needed).
QGIS has been designed with a plugin architecture. This allows many newfeatures/functions to be easily added to the application. Many of the featuresin QGIS are actually implemented as either core or external plugins.
- Core Plugins are maintained by the QGIS Development Team and areautomatically part of every QGIS distribution. They are written in one of twolanguages: C++ or Python. More information about core plugins are provided inSection Using QGIS Core Plugins
- External Plugins are currently all written in Python. They are stored inexternal repositories and maintained by the individual authors. They can beadded to QGIS using the Python Plugin Installer. More informationabout external plugins is provided in Section Loading an external QGIS Plugin.
Managing Plugins¶
Managing plugins in general means loading or unloading them using thePlugin Manager. External plugins can be installed and directlyactivated or uninstalled using the Python Plugin Installer. Todeactivate and reactivate external plugins, the Plugin Manager isused again.
Loading a QGIS Core Plugin¶
Loading a QGIS Core Plugin is done from the main menuPlugins ‣ Manage Plugins
https://scoopever.weebly.com/doodle-god-mac-download-free.html. Figure Plugins 1:
The Plugin Manager lists all the available plugins and their status(loaded or unloaded), including all core plugins and all external plugins thathave been installed and automatically activated using the Python PluginInstaller (see Section Loading an external QGIS Plugin). Those plugins that arealready loaded have a check mark to the left of their name. Figure_plugins_1shows the Plugin Manager dialog.
To enable a particular plugin, click on the checkbox to the left of the pluginname, and click [OK]. When you exit the application, a list of loaded pluginsis retained, and the next time you run QGIS these plugins are automaticallyloaded.
Tip
Crashing Plugins
If you find that QGIS crashes on startup, a plugin may be at fault. You canstop all plugins from loading by editing your stored settings file (seeOptions for location). Locate the plugins settings and change allthe plugin values to false to prevent them from loading.
For example, to prevent the ‘Delimited text’ plugin from loading, theentry in $HOME/.config/QuantumGIS/qgis.conf on Linux should look likethis: AddDelimitedTextLayer=false.
Do this for each plugin in the [Plugins] section. You can then start QGIS andadd the plugins one at a time from the Plugin Manager to determinewhich plugin is causing the problem.
Loading an external QGIS Plugin¶
External QGIS plugins are written in Python. They are by default stored in eitherthe ‘Official’ QGIS Repository, or in various other external repositoriesmaintained by individual authors. The ‘Official’ QGIS Repository is added bydefault in Python Plugin installer.
Detailed documentation about the usage, minimum QGIS version, homepage, authors, and other important information are provided for the ‘Official’ QGIS Repositoryat http://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/. For other external repositories, they mightbe available with the external plugins themselves. In general it is not includedin this manual.
Note
Updates of core python plugins may be available in this repository as externaloverlays.
Note
fTools, Mapserver Export, and the Plugin Installer are Python plugins, butthey are also part of the QGIS sources, and are automatically loaded andenabled inside the QGIS Plugin Manager (see Section Loading an external QGIS Plugin).
Currently there are over 150 external plugins available from the ‘Official’ QGISRepository. Some of these plugins offer functionality that will be required bymany users (for example: providing the user with the ability to view and editOpenStreetMap data, or to add GoogleMap layers) while others offer veryspecialized functions (for example: Calculate economic pipe diameters for watersupply networks).
It is, however, quite straightforward to search through all the available externalplugins by providing keywords, choosing a named repository and/or filtering onthe status of plugins (currently installed or uninstalled in your system).Searching and filtering is done from the QGIS Python Plugin Installer(see figure_plugins_2).
Tip
Add more repositories
To add external author repositories, open the Plugin Installer(Plugins ‣ Fetch Python Plugins), go to the tabRepositories, and click [Add]. If you do not want one or moreof the added repositories, they can be disabled via the [Edit.] button,or completely removed with the [Delete] button.
There is only one step required to integrate external plugins into QGIS:
- Download an external plugin from a repository using the PythonPlugin Installer (see Using the QGIS Python Plugin Installer). The new externalplugin will be added to the list of available plugins in the PluginManager and is automatically loaded.
Using the QGIS Python Plugin Installer¶
In order to download and install an external Python plugin, go toPlugins ‣Fetch PythonPlugins. The Plugin Installer window will appear (figure_plugins_2)with the tab Plugins, containing a list of all locally installedPython plugins, as well as plugin available in remote repositories.
Figure Plugins 2:
Each plugin can be either:
- not installed - this means the plugin is available in the repository, butis not installed yet. In order to install it, select the plugin from the listand click the button [Install plugin].
- new - this means that the plugin is newly available in the repository.
- installed - this indicates that the plugin is already installed. If it isalso available in any repository the [Reinstall plugin] button will beenabled. If the available version is older than the installed version, the[Downgrade plugin] button will appear instead.
- upgradeable - this means that the plugin is installed, but there is anupdated version available. In this case, the [Upgrade plugin] and[Upgrade all] buttons will be enabled.
- invalid - this means that the plugin is installed, but is unavailable orbroken. The reason will be explained in the plugin description field.
Plugins tab
To install a plugin, select it from the list and click the [Install plugin]button. The plugin is then activated and installed in its own directory.
- Linux and other unices
- /share/qgis/python/plugins
- $HOME/.qgis/python/plugins
- Mac OS X
- /Contents/MacOS/share/qgis/python/plugins
- /Users/$USERNAME/.qgis/python/plugins
- Windows
- C:ProgramFilesQGISpythonplugins
- C:DocumentsandSettings$USERNAME.qgispythonplugins
If the installation is successful, a confirmation message will appear.
If the installation fails, the reason for the failure will be displayed in awarning dialog. Most often, errors are the result of connection problems and/ormissing Python modules. In the former case you will likely need to wait beforetrying the install again, in the latter case, you should install the missingmodules relevant to your operating system prior to using the plugin. For Linux, most required modules should be available via a package manager. For installinstructions in Windows visit the module home page.
If you are using a proxy, you may need to configure it underEdit ‣ Options (Gnome, OSX) or Settings ‣ Options(KDE, Windows)` on the Proxy tab.
The [Uninstall plugin] button is enabled only if the selected plugin isinstalled and is not a core plugin. Note that if you have installed an update toa core plugin, you can uninstall this update with the [Uninstall plugin] andrevert to the version shipped with Quantum GIS. This default version however, cannot be uninstalled.
Repositories tab
The second tab Repositories, contains a list of plugin repositoriesavailable for the Plugin Installer. Maya 2016 manual download. By default, only the QGIS OfficialRepository is enabled. You can add several user-contributed repositories, including the central QGIS Contributed Repository and other external repositoriesby clicking the [Add .] button. The added repositories contain a largenumber of useful plugins which are not maintained by the QGIS Development Team.As such, we cannot take any responsibility for them. You can also manage therepository list manually, that is add, remove, and edit the entries. Temporarilydisabling a particular repository is possible by clicking the [Edit .]button.
Options tab
The Options tab is where you can configure the settings of thePlugin Installer. The Check for updates onstartup checkbox tells QGIS to automatically look for plugin updates and news.By default, if this feature is enabled all repositories listed and enabled inthe Repositories tab are checked for updates each time the programis started. The frequency of update checking can be adjusted using the dropdownmenu, and may be adjusted from once a day right up to once a month. If a newplugin or update is available for one of the installed plugins, a notificationwill appear in the Status Bar. If the checkbox is disabled, looking for updatesand news is performed only when the Plugin Installer is manuallylaunched from the menu.
Although the plugin installer update can handle ports different from 80, someinternet connections will cause problems when attempting to automatically checkfor updates. In these cases, a Looking for new plugins. Iphoto trial download for mac. indicator will remainvisible in the Status Bar during your entire QGIS session, and may cause a programcrash when exiting. In this case please disable the checkbox.
In addition, you may specify the type of plugins that are displayed by thePython Plugin Installer. Under Allowed plugins, you can specifywhether you would like to:
- Only show plugins from the official repository
- Show all plugins except those marked as experimental
- Show all plugins, even those marked as experimental
Using experimental plugins
Mosaic web browser download mac. Experimental plugins are generally unsuitable for production use. These pluginsare in the early stages of development, and should be considered ‘incomplete’or ‘proof of concept’ tools. The QGIS development team does not recommendinstalling these plugins unless you intend to use them for testing purposes.
Data Providers¶
Data Providers are ‘special’ plugins that provides access to a data store. Bydefault, QGIS supports PostGIS layers and disk-based data stores supported bythe GDAL/OGR library. A Data Provider plugin extends the ability of QGIS to useother data sources.
Data Provider plugins are registered automatically by QGIS at startup. They arenot managed by the Plugin Manager but used behind the scenes when a data type isadded as a layer in QGIS.

For Windows installers please go toThe main installers page.
For new users we recommend the standalone installers.
For more advanced QGIS users you can use OSGeo4W packages, which make itpossible to install several versions in parallel.
The OSGeo4W repository contains a lot of software from OSGeo projects.QGIS and all dependencies are included, along with Python, GRASS, GDAL, etc.The installer is able to install from internet or just download all neededpackages beforehand. The downloaded files are kept in a local directory for future installations.Steps are:
- Download OSGeo4W Installer (32 bit or64 bit) and start it
- Select Advanced Install,
- navigate to the Desktop section
- and pick one or more of the following packages:

Don’t blindly do a full install of OSGeo4W. Only install QGIS andmaybe other components you like. Dependencies will be includedautomatically. A full install pulls in components that require third partyadditions, which need to be installed manually. These components render theinstallation unusable without those additions.
